MANILA, Philippines – Nine years ago, Carl Dimakulangan led the University of Santo Thomas to a perfect 16-0 title race in UAAP Season 71, where he also won the 2009 Season MVP and Best Server Award.

Fast forward to the present day, the head coach’s career has moved from Dimakulangan player to full circle after reaching the final with a perfect record of 14-0 in the UAAP Season 84 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at National University.

The young coach was reminded of their historic race for the Tiger Spikers when they made their first appearance in the Final Four era of the Lady Bulldogs.

“It simply came to our notice then. I am very happy that I did it again as a coach, “said Dimakulangan after completing NU’s elimination round sweep with a 25-22, 29-27, 25-17 win over UST at the Mall of Asia Arena on Thursday.

Knowing the experience of a live final, Dimakulangan insisted on the Lady Bulldogs, consisting of Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon, Shina Toring and Lamus Lamina, whose work was not yet finished.

“At this stage the elimination round is over, we are expecting a different kind of game and a higher level (in the final). There is a pressure, but I remind my team that the work is not done yet, “he said.

NU will have to wait for their final opponent as the semifinals will be played in the stapledar format. Atenio was able to play-off with Adamson for the No. 4 spot after beating the University of the Philippines.

Seed 4th UST will face off in a do-or-die match where the winner will advance to the last round of the stairs against the twice-defeated La Salle.

Dimaculangan are keeping a premium for their recovery period, but rest assured that their shots to win the UAAP title for the first time since 1957 will not disappoint their defenders.
