Chutt Reyes knows the steep track is waiting for the young Gilas Pilipinas team to leave in a few days — and the experienced coach believes the nationals should not do it any other way.
“Sometimes, we lose. We’re going to lose big, maybe. But at least, our young players are being tested, “Reyes, head of the national cage program, told reporters Sunday night. “It’s the best way to face international competition, isn’t it?
“They are going to New Zealand, they will play an experienced team at home. What could be a bigger challenge for Carl Tamayo, SJ Belangel, Ange Koume, and those other guys? What could be a bigger challenge than this? As I said, they will only grow out of that experience. “
Reyes’s comments came as Samahang Basketball NP Pilipinas unveiled a 12-man list that would see action in a pair-friendly action to prepare for the third window of the Asian qualifiers for the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) World Cup.
Also on the list are Dwight Ramos, RJ Abriantos, Dave Ildefenso, Geo Chiu and Will Navarro – each with a glass experience.
NCAA Most Valuable Player Range Abando, Filipino-American teenager Francis Lopez, La Salle giant Kevin Cuambao and Kifar Ravena Crew have been brought in to play a pair at the Gyeonggi-do South Korea’s Anyang Gymnasium starting Friday.
“We wanted to see a lot of young people who could make it to the final lineup [the Basketball World Cup in] 2023, so it was a great opportunity, “said Reyes.
It remains to be seen whether the same squad will compete in the third window of the qualifiers, which will see the Philippines compete against the Tall Blacks in Auckland and then India in the City near Pass.
“It’s still hard to say,” said Reyes, who will run the campaign on behalf of his deputy, Nenad Vuchinich.
“The [contingent] Returning here on July 2. It will then host India on July 3. Then the Asia Cup [in Jakarta] Opens July 12, ”he said. “So when exactly will they get on the train when they arrive? What are we going to put [pros] Squad, or that list?
“It’s to allow everyone to realize how difficult the situation is,” Reyes said. “There will be games here and there is a lot of schedule. But at least, we’re testing a lot of different players so, as I said, hopefully we can figure out who can be tapped for 2023. “
