Together, they were one of the most famous couples in the world, but more than a decade later, Colombian superstar Shakira and FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique called for time for their relationship, they announced on Saturday.

The 45-year-old “Hips Don’t Lie” actress is one of the biggest names in the music industry worldwide and has sold over 60 million albums.

Spanish football hero Pique, 35, has won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championships, and three-time Champions League winner for Barcelona.

At the closing ceremony of the event in South Africa, Shakira sang her contagious hit “Waka Waka”, the official song of the 2010 World Cup.

They met during the filming of the music video and exchanged messages a few weeks before the closing ceremony.

Once official, they soon became the darlings of the paparazzi.

The couple has two sons and has lived together for many years on the outskirts of Barcelona.

“We are sorry to hear that. Those of us for the welfare of our children [utmost] Priority, we ask for respect for (our) privacy, “the couple said in a statement.

With a mix of Latin and Arabic rhythms and rock influences, three-time Grammy winner Shakira has made major world hits with songs such as “Hips Don’t Lie” and “When, Wherever” by one of Latin America’s biggest stars.

In 2020, she performed with Jennifer Lopez on the half-time show of the final of the NFL Super Bowl Championship in Miami, one of the most watched half-hours on American television.

Legal case

With Shakira by his side, Pick’s celebrity has reached new heights and the couple has made an impact outside of music and sports.

PK also became a successful entrepreneur.

In 2015, they hosted a dinner with Rakuten, a Japanese online retailer, which resulted in Barcelona’s biggest sponsorship deal.

Pique’s interest in sports was not limited to football. In 2018 its investment fund Kosmos acquired the Davis Cup on a 25-year deal worth 3 billion.

PK also took advantage of the off-season for postgraduate studies at Harvard University.

The couple announced their separation a week after a Barcelona court rejected an appeal by the singer in a Spanish court document approaching a permanent trial in Spain for tax fraud.

Spanish prosecutors have accused him of defrauding the Spanish tax office of between 14.5 million euros ($ 15.5 million) in income earned between 2012 and 2014.

They say he moved to Spain in 2011 when his relationship with Pique became public, but maintained official tax residency in the Bahamas until 2015.

His defense attorneys said he only moved to Spain full-time in 2015 and insisted that “his treatment of tax matters in countries where he had to pay taxes has always been impeccable”.

‘Dark Moments’

PK, facing his own legal problems, saw Spain’s Supreme Court overturn a lower court ruling in December that ordered him to pay the tax office 2.1 million euros in back taxes and fines.

Shakira was also named in one of the biggest leaks of financial documents in October 2021, known as the “Pandora Papers”, among public figures associated with offshore assets.

In an interview with AFP in 2019, Shakira said that temporarily losing her voice two years ago was “the darkest moment of her life” and affected her “deeply”.

He later regained his voice naturally, without the need for surgery as advised by doctors and later went on a world tour in 2018.
