MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine men’s volleyball team overcame a late fall to Myanmar, losing 26-24, 22-25, 25-22, 27-29, 16-14, to fifth place in the 31st Southeast Asian Games on Friday. Take Kwang to the gymnasium.
The Filipino Spykers lost the match 2-1, failed to close the game in the fourth set and blew a 5-2 lead in the fifth set as the Burmese reached the match point, 14-13.
But Rex Intal refuses to give up their final biennial meet game, with a block nail to tie the set, 14-all.
Brian Bagunas provided two consecutive blocks to take the Philippines to a winning note in the competition, where it failed to finish or surpass its historic silver medal in the 2019 edition.
Zhou Umandal also had a timely hit drill in the fifth set, only to be dismissed by coach Dante Alinsunurin after leading John Vic de Guzman 12-11 in the fifth set.
Joshua Retamar produced plays for Filipino spikers, led by Bagunas and Umandal. JP Bugaon also provided a strong presence in the middle, while Mark Espejo also played an important role but sat out the latter part of the game.
The Philippines ended its men’s volleyball season with a back-to-back win, including an impressive three-set win against Malaysia on Thursday.
The men’s national team lost to Cambodia and Thailand in an undefeated pool event, bombed out of the medal race.
