MANILA, Philippines – Rena Furukawa has won the women’s judo-57kg category to win the national team’s first gold at the 31st Southeast Asian Games on Thursday at the Hoai Duc Gymnasium.
In the final, Furukawa defeated Chu Mayat No Wai of Myanmar 1-0.
Orafin Senatham of Thailand, who won a bronze medal at the 2019 SEA Games, surpassed his previous finish in the knockout semifinals.
Furukawa lost to Cambodia’s Dalin Cheng in the preliminary round
Meanwhile, the Philippine judo team also won two silver and one bronze medal.
Casey Nakano, who ruled the 2019 SEA Games, failed to defend his throne after losing to Indonesia’s Iksan Apriadi in the 73kg final.
John Viron’s return to the 90kg gold medal match in his hometown Baji An Tai Lee has been decided for the silver.
Megumi Qurayoshi won bronze in the 63 kg category by defeating Thai Varuni Buatan.
