SEA Games: Philippine chess team Blitz adds silver, bronze

MANILA, Philippines – Janelle Frena and Shina Mendoza won silver in the women’s chess blitz at the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam’s Urban Planning and Expo Quang Nin exhibition on Saturday.

Frena and Mendoza went 1-1 in Round 5 as Rifqah Fahada and Munajjah Azahara of Malaysia won gold medals in the competition.

Frayna also won two bronze medals in the women’s individual blitz and with her teammate Marie Antoinette San Diego in the team’s fastest event.

Meanwhile, Daniel Quizen and Emanuel Garcia won bronze in the men’s team blitz.

Quizon and Garcia also lost 1-1 in the fifth round, handing the silver to Indonesia’s Susanto Megaranto and Muhammad Lutfi Ali.

The national team had two silver medals, including the men’s team Paolo Barsamina and Darwin Laylo’s quick second place finish and four bronze medals.
