MANILA, Philippines – The men’s beach volleyball team of the Philippines completed a sweep of a pool by defeating host Vietnam in a gold match at the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Tuan Chou Beach on Wednesday.
After splitting the first two matches, national team coach Will Veraio decided to field Jude Garcia and Requinton in the golden match against Vietnam, who had different partners in their previous match.
It worked for the men’s team in the Philippines as Garcia and Requinton beat Nut Ton Long and Nguyen Van Naha 21-15, 21-16 in gold to complete a three-game sweep in Pool A – before the semifinals, including wins against Singapore and Cambodia.
Garcia lost to Nat and Nguyen in the first match with his teammate Krung Arbasto, 15-21, 21-17, 12-15.
But Requinton and Runran were able to make a decision after defeating Abdila Nguyen Lam Toi and Trang Kuang Vu, 19-21, 21-16, 15-13.
Philippine Pool B will take on second place and runner-up of 2019 SEA Games Thailand in the semifinals on Thursday at 10 am.
