The Philippines got a streak in the women’s basketball tournament of the Southeast Asian Games by defeating Thailand 96-81 on Wednesday morning.
The Gilas Pilipinas women leaned on the all-rounder Afril Bernardino, who dominated the Thais with 20 points and 16 rebounds in a competition at the Than Tri Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Stephanie Barbarabe and Trina Guitinko each scored 10 points to give the Filipinos all sorts of encouragement – from speed to emotion – to the fight against the hosts this Thursday at 6pm.
The defending champions enjoyed a 25-point lead and were able to contribute for the second time in a row from all complaints from coach Pat Aquino.
The Thais, who settled for silver in the final version of the showcase, were drawn 25-27 at the start of the second frame.
But Gilas’ deadly three-point shot confirmed that this was the closest enemy he could find, and Bernardino again led the defense with three blocks and three assists.
The men’s team is also set to extend its winning streak this Wednesday, shooting for a third straight win against Singapore at 4pm.
