BAC NINH – Second seed Alex Ila kicked off his campaign with an impressive win at the Hanaka Sports and Service Center here on Tuesday in the women’s singles tennis event at the 31st Southeast Asian Games.
Ila, 16, advanced to the quarterfinals after losing 6-2, 6-1 to Fonfathep Philavong of Laos, while teammate Janaila Rose Prula also reached the quarterfinals without breaking a sweat, winning the walkover against Malayalak Pathummakuronen of Laos for medical reasons. .
Ila will face Singapore’s Linal N Tong Lim in the next round and Prula will face host Vietnam’s top pick Chanel Wang Nguyen.
Defending men’s doubles champion Francis Casey Alcantara and Jason Petrombon of the Philippines advanced to the quarterfinals after losing 6-1, 6-1 to Cambodia’s Matthew David Krusling and Samniang Long.
