Lisbon – Cristiano Ronaldo’s two goals helped Portugal beat Switzerland 4-0 in their UEFA Nations League match at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon on Sunday.

William Carvalho and Joao Cancello were also on the scoresheet as the hosts wasted countless opportunities to further insult the spectators, who suffered their biggest defeat since losing to Germany on the same scoreline in 2008.

Portugal have four points from their first two Group A matches and are ahead of second-placed Czech Republic in goal difference. Switzerland are on zero after successive defeats and have been unbeaten in their last four World Cup qualifiers since Qatar qualified for the World Cup.

Carvalho opened the scoring when he reacted quickly to a loose ball when Ronaldo’s free-kick was dropped and the latter acquired a quick fire brace to elevate his international goal record to 117.

Ronaldo should have scored a hat-trick when he missed two great chances before halftime, the first just believable miss from six yards out, but the fourth goal for Portugal in the second half was left to Cancello.

Portugal will host the Czech Republic in their next match on Thursday, and Switzerland will entertain Spain in Geneva the same evening.
