MANILA, Philippines – The Asics Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series is envisioned to be a traditional ongoing event in Manila, attracting health, tourism and cultural crowds, with about 5,000 participants firing on Sunday’s opening stage with gunfire.
Meanwhile, organizers hope the project will become like the Boston Marathon or the New York City Marathon, which will become a major sporting spectacle as well as a showcase of the beauty of the capital city.
Fun races for the 5-kilometer and 10K will begin at 5 a.m., while the half-marathon and full 42K Rizal Park will have green light at 5 p.m. .
“We’ve been working on this project for the last three years,” said Princess Galura, general manager of Sunrise Events and Ironman. “The Philippines has no marathon of its own in the traditions of Berlin, Boston and Chicago, and Filipinos’ love of music, song and dance only makes the Rock and Roll Bank perfect for the city of Manila for its progress and cleanliness.”
Arriving Manila Mayor Hani Lakuna will welcome the runners who will be able to enjoy some of the city’s most famous landmarks such as Chinatown, Jones Bridge, Mehan Garden, Cartilang Katipunan.
Organizers have promised a festive atmosphere with Asics as the title sponsor, Gatorade as the hydration partner, as well as the meat backed up by Alaska, Lightwater, Regent and Santa.
With the celebration of the 450th founding of this race city. Coincides with the 161st birth anniversary of Jose Rizal.
Alex Lewis of the Manila Youth Bureau said: “We all know that efforts are being made to bring Manila back to being the main tourist capital of the country as well as to promote its traditional sites. “With outdoor activities now open, it also encourages healthy living among Manilano.”
MYB has also enlisted the help of concerned barangays and the private sector to ensure peace and order and ensure safe conduct of the event. DJ Bling One, The Moranos Bad, Gracenote Band, Ruizen Lista, Elmo and Arkin Magalona, Hardware Syndrome, Cahillum Drumbeaters and Echiworm provide music and fun on the race route.
