Luke Walton, the former head coach of the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers, will join the Cleveland Cavaliers as an assistant coach, multiple reports said Tuesday.
Walton was sacked as head coach of Sacramento after the team started the 2021-22 season with a 6-11 record. Under Kings Walton, the two-plus season went ahead 8-93.
Prior to coaching in Sacramento, Walton led the Lakers for three seasons, running at 98-148. He spent two seasons as an assistant to the Golden State Warriors and coached the Lakers in 2016-17.
Under head coach JB Bickerstaff, the Cavaliers finished this last NBA regular season 44-38 and were eliminated from the play-in tournament by beating the Brooklyn Nets before falling to the Atlanta Hawks.
Walton, 42, was an NBA player for 10 seasons. He ended his career with the Cavs in 2012-13, scoring 3.4 points per game and playing 50 games.
