MADRID – Croatia midfielder Luka Modric’s one-year contract with Real Madrid has been extended and he will stay with the European champions until at least June 2023, the club announced on Wednesday.
The announcement came after the 36-year-old won his fifth Champions League title in a decade with La Liga champions. He also won the Ballon d’Or in 2018.
This is the second year in a row that Modric has signed a one-year extension with Real as his current contract was due to expire at the end of June.
Modric has played 436 matches for Real, scored 31 goals and provided 63 assists in all competitions. He is the 20th most played player in the history of the two clubs behind Cristiano Ronaldo.
In addition to five Champions League titles, Madrid have won three La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, four Spanish Super Cups, three European Super Cups and four Club World Cups in Madrid.
