The Ladies Philippine Golf Tour has been lost lately, with Chanelle Avaricio providing fireworks, shooting a tour record eight-under-par 64 on Wednesday to capture a five-shot lead after the first 18 holes of the P750,000 ICTSI Pradera Verde Ladies Classic in Lubao, Pampanga.
Playing a wide-open format that rewarded the bombers from the tees, Avaricio was flawless at the 29-run turn and led Pamela Mariano to five runs with a total of 10 birdies in an impressive display and veteran Chihiro Ikeda, who scored 71, scored seven.
Avaricio’s Sterling Round easily snatched the 67-year-old record set by Thailand’s Princess Supral and Pimpadsorn Sankagaro, and her first nine performances were the best in the 10-year history of the local tour.
“I’ve played a steady long game and then my putts just keep dropping,” said two-time winner and runner-up Avaricio in the first five legs of the season after birding three of his last five holes, followed by bogeys at 11 and 13. “I will try to play consistently [in the last two rounds]”
Hermione Constantino returns to level 72, trailing by eight like Sarah Ababa, while Sunshine Barracks, another favorite, joins at 73.
Mount Malarayat winner Ikeda was working on a three-under card after his first 11 holes only to lose all of those three shots in his next three. He birdied par-5 18th to turn it into the third sub-par score of the day.
