PARIS – Liverpool deserved more than their Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid after dominating Saturday’s match but they will return to the challenge for Europe’s elite club trophy, says coach Juergen Klopp.

Real made their 14th European Cup record-breaking claim with a 1-0 win over Liverpool after Vinicius Jr. scored just an hour before the Spanish champions’ goal.

It was Real’s fourth Champions League title in seven years as they improved on their competitive record with their eighth win in the final.

“We had more shots on goal but the most decisive situation was for Madrid,” Klopp told a news conference. “They scored a goal and we didn’t. This is the simplest explanation in the world of football. Tough and tough.

“When the goalkeeper (Thibaut Courtois) was the best of the match, something went wrong for the other team.

“We could have played better football and they could, but they didn’t. Statistics are 50-50 but, apart from the goal, they didn’t have a shot at the goal. “

Courtois made a great save in the 59th minute to secure Real’s lead, with Liverpool attempting 23 goals in Real’s three.

“We saw we did a lot better but it wasn’t enough,” said Klopp, who led Liverpool to three Champions League finals and a winning streak in 2019.

The Merseyside club, who aimed to quadruple a few weeks ago, finished the season with two domestic cup wins but missed out on the Premier League and Champions League.

The German coach said: “Madrid had a shot at goal and that was a goal.” “We played a good game but it was not good enough when you lost 1-0. I told the boys in the changing room that I was already feeling proud.

“These guys played an outstanding season and the two competitions we didn’t win we didn’t win by the smallest possible distance.”

Liverpool have been knocked out of the Premier League by one point behind defending champions Manchester City.

“The boys will realize how special they were in what they did (this season),” he added.

“It’s definitely a different kind of success, not the success you want, but I have a strong feeling that we will come back.

“The boys are really competitive, we have an outstanding group together, we will have an outstanding group together again and then we will go again.

“Of course we have to try a little harder than the others, but no problem. Where is next year? Istanbul. Book a hotel! ”
