With less than four minutes left to go down to 12, with 34.1 seconds left, Alexander pulled the glass into Conve’s basket.
Japan, however, closed one last stop at the last stop, forcing Conway’s three-point effort to seal the victory before scoring at the other end.
The win puts Japan straight to the quarter-finals while the Giles will have to beat Kazakhstan to reach the last eight, which ended in a tough Group D behind South Korea and New Zealand.
Phil-American Callum Harris led the Giles with 18 points and six rebounds, while Jared Baha’i had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Giles finished second in the group stage 1-1, beating Kuwait in the first game less than 24 hours earlier.
Yuto Kawashima fit the glass with 26 points and 18 rebounds. He made his 21 points in the first half.
Filipinos went from the free throw line to 9 of 17 and shot themselves in the leg. They have made just four of their 23 attempts from a long range.
