MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Philipinus Youth finished seventh at the FIBA Under-16 Asian Championships after beating Iran 95-87 at the Al-Gharafa Sports Club Multi-Purpose Hall in Doha, Qatar on Sunday.
The national team leaned on a troupe of Alex Conway, Callum Harris and Renzo Competent to finish a two-game skid for seventh place, the squad’s worst finish in the tournament since finishing fifth in 2015.
Conway conceded 18 points, four assists and three rebounds, while Harris conceded 15 points, six boards, three dimes, two blocks and a steal.
Competent drew four triples for 14 points to bounce back from a 77-88 defeat to South Korea in a class match on Saturday.
Jared Bahaa played a key role with 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Zine Mahmoud added 11 points and five boards.
The Glass Youth eliminated Kazakhstan 1-1 in the Elimination Round, 83-60, in a play-off match to reach the quarter-finals, where it lost to Australia, 83-109.
The Filipinos defeated Mohammed Khosravi’s 28-point effort. For Iran, Sarem Jafari and Mohammad Amini were also disbanded.
