MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines’ Samhang basketball team will move on without worrying about the Philippines losing the Southeast Asian Games.

More than two weeks after the Philippine men’s basketball reign at the SEA Games ended at a staggering rate for Indonesia, the SBP has focused on preparing the country for the upcoming big tournament as well as the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Disaster has taught the basketball federation invaluable lessons to move forward.

“The most important thing we can do is solidarity and preparation for the extended period and not just a few weeks or even a month. During the PSA forum on Tuesday, SBP executive director Sonny Barrios said the longer the preparation, the better.

“The value of scouting an opponent is also a lesson in moving forward for any tournament for that matter.”

Barrios said Gilas was already training in the next window of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in New Zealand and Manila, and for the FIBA Asia Cup Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia in July.

Injured Reyes assistant Nenad Vusinik will call for shots for the Gills in the qualifiers before Reyes takes the lead again for the Jakarta tournament.

Also tapped is Gilas Pilipinas Youth, which will compete in the FIBA Under-16 Asian Championships in Doha, Qatar from June 12-19.
