Dutch wildcard team Van Rijthoven wins first ATP title by defeating Daniel Medvedev

Dutch wildcard teammate Van Rijthoven ended his dream run at the Libema Open by defeating top seed Daniel Medvedev 6-4 6-1 in the final at the S-Hertogenbosch on Sunday.

Van Rijthoven, ranked 205th in the world, has never won a major draw in an ATP Tour event so far this week, knocking out third-seeded Taylor Fritz and second-seeded Felix Agar-Aliasime in the 65th minute before winning against Medvedev. Title.

Van Rizthoven, 25, smashed Medvedev four times and when the Russians hit the return net at the championship point, he drowned as the crowd cheered on their first Dutch champion in 19 years on home soil.

“Congratulations Team, Amazing Week. For the first time in an ATP Tournament (Final) and directly you destroyed the world number two in a straight set,” Medvedev said after collecting the runners-up trophy.

“I don’t know what it feels like, so it must be a good feeling!”

Despite the loss, US Open champion Medvedev returned to the top of the ATP rankings on Monday.
