Daniel Medvedev reached the ‘s-Hertogenbosch semifinals after defeating Ilya Ivashka in a fight against banned Wimbledon players on Friday and is close to regaining the top spot in the world.
The top-seeded Russian lost to his 41st-ranked Belarusian opponent 7-6 (10/8), 6-4 in one hour and 51 minutes in the Wimbledon warm-up event.
On Monday, for the first time since March, Medvedev will regain the world number one ranking from Novak Djokovic.
Medvedev and Ivaskha, as well as other Russian and Belarusian players, have been banned from Wimbledon since the Ukraine invasion.
“I don’t have many points to defend on the grass and I have to win some, so hopefully I can start here and play well,” Medvedev said.
“Each round point and the more you get, the more you have to go step by step.”
In Saturday’s semifinal, Medvedev will face France’s Adrian Mannarino, who won the most recent version of the event in the Netherlands in 2019.
Mannarino defeated Brandon Nakashima of the United States 6-6 (5/6), 6-1, 6-4 in his quarterfinals.
