There is no title on the line. And whatever emerges from this final stapler matchup will probably be a footnote for the coronation of an undefeated top seed.
But these are Atenio and La Salle, the sworn rivals who will face off in the final of the UAAP Season 84 Women’s Volleyball Tournament on Thursday night at the Mall of Asia Arena for the right to fight National University (NU).
And whenever these two schools collide, it’s almost certain to be an instant classic.
The Blue Eagles are the defending champions of the tournament কিন্তু but it’s more of a label than a real measure of strength. Atenio have lost the core of his 2019 champion squad and are raising hopes on a young and courageous crew who beat Santo Thomas (UST) No. 3 pick University in three sets on Tuesday.
“I am satisfied with the way the players have performed; [the result] It will be a big factor in our next match, “said Atenio coach Oliver Almadro.
The next match will be on Thursday at 7:30 pm. And it will be against a La Salle squad that will be more equipped than the rest of the season’s reputation.
“It’s very important for us to beat twice [protection]”Because when we have it, you can play with confidence. There’s something coming into our game,” said Jolina Della Cruz, La Salle’s top Lady Spyker in the play-off bonus.
The Blue Eagle doesn’t have a margin for that error. But Atenio has sharpened himself for a game where he has nothing to lose.
“We’ve played three knockouts… and we have to thank our Lord for the strength he gives us,” said Almadro.
In addition to Atenio’s beliefs, Atenio also has beliefs. It will be Faith Nisperos, the Blue Eagles’ top offensive weapon.
“We’re getting stronger,” said Nisperos, who scored 24 points in Atenio’s 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 win over the US in the do-or-die duel.
“What matters is the rules of our house,” said Almadro. “We work hard in those areas [and] We will live for another day. “
La Salle will bank on a solid lineup that is getting stronger and more confident as the season progresses.
The No. 2 team had its ups and downs until Della Cruz, Thea Gaggett, Aleia Malaluan, Fifi Sharma and Baby Zine Soreno slowly found their place in the La Salle system.
“It simply came to our notice then. Winning a point is very difficult. So when we assemble, we have to win that point. We can’t afford it, “said Della Cruz.
La Salle assistant coach Benson Buckbok is surprised to see the rapid growth of Lady Spykers: “They work hard for each set. When the score reaches 20, you can be sure that everyone on the team will fight hard. ”
If La Salle wins, it will automatically advance to the final against NU. A win by Atenio would create a knockout match between the two opponents.
