MANILA, Philippines – Alex Ella advanced to the quarterfinals of the W25 Madrid Tournament in Ciudad de la Raketa, Spain on Friday, and had a doubles match against his doubles partner Alice Robb of France.
The 18-year-old Filipino tennis star lost 4-4 in the second round of the singles tournament on Thursday to No. 4 seed Xiaodi UK of China 6-4, 6-2.
Ella, the World Tennis Association (WTA) World No. 419, made a strong 4-1 start in the first set and finished strong in the second set, knocking out the world number 296 UK.
The three-time Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist and his French partner Robe, who is ranked No. 8, are battling for a place in the next round of the Madrid tournament.
Robbie lost to Spaniard Marta Soriano Santiago 6-3, 6-4 to set up a showdown with his Filipino partner.
Ella and Robbie were knocked out of the quarterfinals of the W25 Madrid doubles last Wednesday, losing 0-6, 4-6 to Joe Hives of Australia and Katherine Sebv of Canada.
