MANILA, Philippines – Alex Ila has recovered from a slow start and reached the quarterfinals of the W60 Madrid in Spain on Thursday, beating Spain’s Evan Cavell-Reimers 0-6, 6-2, 6-5.
The 413-ranked Filipino tennis star will face third-seeded Australian Jamie Forlis in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The 17-year-old was forced to make a decision after losing 0-6 in the opening set with full control of the second frame.
Ella showed grace in the pressure in the third set, battling a 3-5 deficit to book tickets to the quarter-finals.
Rafael Nadal, the Academy Scholar, won his first Pro title last year, beating Reimers 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in the final of the W15 Manakor.
After winning her first three games, Ella is ready to fight a strong opponent in Forlis, who recently won Romania’s W25 Madrid and W60 Brasov.
After winning the W15 Manakore for the first time in the first leg of the W25 Chiang Rai in Thailand two months ago, Ila is looking forward to her third pro title in the 60,000 tournament.
