MANILA, Philippines – Alex Ella won his matches in the W60 Madrid singles and doubles event in Spain on Tuesday.
The Filipino teen star advanced to the second round of the $ 60,000 tournament, defeating Bulgaria’s Leah Karatancheva 6-4, 6-4.
Ila will face Chile’s No. 11 Daniela Seguel on Wednesday.
The 17-year-old advanced to the doubles quarterfinals as he and his partner N Shuo Liang of Chinese Taipei defeated Marta Hockey Gonzalez Ensinas of Spain and Basanti Shinde of India 6-2, 6-1.
Ila and Liang will face Hungary’s fourth seed Taima Babos and Valeria Savinich in the quarterfinals.
Rafael Nadal, an Academy Scholar who is competing in his second $ 60,000 tournament since the W60 Grenoble in France, was knocked out of the W25 Madrid quarterfinals last week, losing to doubles partner Alice Robb.
Ella and Robeo also reached the quarterfinals of the doubles event of the tournament.
