I’m sure you are having fun with tons of apps on your iPad by now, both paid and free. Once the wow factor starts to sulk in you would certainly like to try out different ideas on the iPad, which you would usually do on your usual computing platform. And Web Development is one of them. Initially you would think why someone even think about coding on the iPad in first place? There are many occasions where you will find yourself with the iPad and would just need to fix one variable to make the site functional again. And also not to forget the excellent battery life of the iPad also presents some great opportunities when you are in tough situation or traveling. The amazing part is, even on the launch day of iPad, the app store carried at least one app in the productivity segment just to complement our need. On my latest checking there are many apps available on the iPad, which provide the functionality we need:

Gusto for iPad $9.99

Gusto is an app that combines code editing & FTP access and lets you create multiple projects for all your website. Gusto creates a thumbnail for each of your website and it appears right in the main screen. All you need to input are the usual details about your websites. Once you have setup your websites, click on the project website and you are presented with a screen that contains a localhost sidebar, which lists the downloaded files and those you created on the iPad: you can create and download any kind of file, be it HTML or php. The application is very straightforward, download the file you want to work on and edit them, and then upload the file. The code editor is at release 1 stage with all the bear minimum features you would need to get your work done. Gusto is a great app with room for improvement and the developer have great site and support.

For i: Code Editor for the iPad $9.99

For the Developers website:

Beautiful syntax highlighting for many languages. (Notably:Plain text files ActionScript 3, Assembler – x86, MIPS, ASP – VB, JavaScript, ASP.Net – C#, VB, Applescript, C, C++, C#, ColdFusion, CSS, HTML, Javascript, Latex, Lisp, Objective-C, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, SQL – Standard, MySQL, Visual Basic, XML).

Customize the look and feel with your favorite fonts and colors. Edit your themes and import/export (coming soon). Transfer files to and from the app with a built in web server (requires a Wi-Fi network).

Transfer a Zip archive and unzip it from the app. Our keyboard provides useful often-used keys for easy access and quick typing. You can also use Apple’s Keyboard dock or pair a bluetooth keyboard.

The files are auto-saved for you. You can take snapshots of your files and revert back in any time.

Markup $9.99

From the app store definition:

Markup for iPad lets you connect to your websites and edit the text files within them.

Connect to FTP sites: Markup remembers the sites that you add and lets you work on them at any time

Markup beautifully renders thumbnails of your site, so you can quickly find the one you want to access

Browse through folders to find exactly what you’re looking fo

Download, edit, and upload text files such as HTML, CSS, PHP, etc

Create files and folders.

Upload and name files from your photo library.

Easy access to tabs and special characters.

Page text rendered in Inconsolata by Raph Levien, released under the OFL

View images, such as png, jpg, and gif files as well as PDFs and documents from iWork, Microsoft Office that are hosted on your FTP server.

Preview the pages you edit to test them without ever leaving Markup.

Never worry about saving. Just upload when your changes are complete.

Complete UI Persistence: check your email for the login credentials, and come back to find Markup exactly as you left it

InCode @2.99

From the Developers website:

InCode is a sleek code and plain text editor for the iPad. Featuring tabbed editing and easy browsing of file structures, InCode allows you to easily add folders full of files via the iPad’s document sharing capabilities. Once on the device, you can edit on the go, and when you’re done, you can drag the files back to your computer. InCode isn’t just for code – it can read and edit any plain text file, so if you prefer taking notes in plain text, it’s the perfect application.

I recommend to check out the developers website for notices and how to.

Conclusion:

Gusto and Markup are the main contenders over here based on feature set and capabilities. InCode requires on folder copy from a Mac. For I: Code Editor for iPad.
